Giant: Harold Pinter Theatre Live

It is 1983 and Roald Dahl is preparing The Witches for publication when controversy erupts over explicitly antisemitic remarks he has made in print. During one increasingly combustible afternoon at his family home, the celebrated author is confronted by his publishers and faced with a choice: apologise publicly or risk his reputation. John Lithgow gives an award-winning performance as Dahl in Mark Rosenblatt’s provocative, darkly funny drama, exploring prejudice, artistic legacy and the dangerous territory between political argument and hateful rhetoric. Winner of three Olivier Awards including Best New Play, Giant was filmed live in London’s West End ahead of its sold-out Broadway run.

★★★★ "Genuine gripping tension... Scott is on mesmeric form...it's engrossing": The Times

In the tense 72 hours before D-Day, the fate of the Allied invasion hangs on one notoriously unpredictable force: the British weather. Brendan Fraser stars as General Dwight D. Eisenhower, faced with the decision of whether to launch the largest seaborne invasion in history, while military meteorologist Captain James Stagg must convince him that his forecast can be trusted. With time running out and thousands of lives at stake, the pressure becomes almost unbearable. Adapted from David Haig’s acclaimed stage play, Pressure transforms a remarkable true story into a gripping wartime thriller about uncertainty, responsibility and the momentous consequences of a single decision.

Wicker

In a small medieval farming town with rigid social hierarchy and patriarchal culture, a reclusive fisherwoman is ostracized due to her persistent fish smell and rejection of institutionalized marriage. When the japes at her spinster status intensify, she sarcastically commissions for herself a husband made out of wicker. The master weaver brings the Wicker Husband to life, where his utility and dedication to his wife creates a romance so pure it causes absolute chaos amongst the villagers of the closed-minded town.

De Gaulle: Liberte

1943 - Charles de Gaulle is no longer the isolated general who refused to surrender, but the battle for France is far from won. While Free French forces fight across North Africa and Jean Moulin struggles to unite the Resistance at home, de Gaulle faces another formidable challenge: securing France’s political future against an American leadership that remains deeply suspicious of him. Simon Abkarian returns in the concluding part of Antonin Baudry’s sweeping wartime epic, alongside Simon Russell Beale as Winston Churchill and Campbell Scott as Franklin D. Roosevelt. From desert battles and clandestine resistance to D-Day and the liberation of Paris, Liberté brings the struggle for France dramatically home. ★★★★★ "Unforgettable... thrilling... both extraordinary films": The Sunday Times

Comédie Française

The Comédie-Française is one of France’s most revered arts institutions, and the oldest still-performing theatre company in the world. There is one golden rule: the play is NEVER cancelled.

Unfortunately for theatre producer Nina (Pauline Clément), everything is unravelling just three hours before the premiere of her first production – an ambitious retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Her lead actor is stuck on a train, tensions are exploding, passions flaring, equipment breaking down and egos are clashing. With panic setting in and the clock ticking Nina must hold things together at all costs. Will the show go on?

France’s hit summer comedy and the runaway winner of four awards at the Alpe d’Huez comedy Film Festival, Comédie Française is a delicious behind-the-scenes farce which is unafraid to poke fun at the highbrow reputation of French theatre.

Featuring a cast of real-life members of the Comédie-Française company, this is a gleeful, knowing parody and a sheer delight.

In French with English subtitles.
